GOLDEN RATIO
FlexTune© Four Hole trumpet

The FlexTune© trumpets are the ultimate compromise between a fully modern version of a natural trumpet and a historic instrument. The FlexTune© system gives you the opportunity to adjust the proportions of the instrument in different keys in an uncomplicated and logical way. The Golden Ratio mathematical series have been used for the bell design, sleeve length, tapers (where used), etc. The Golden ratio trumpet works so well that it has replaced the standard (basic) flextune trumpet design.

LEAD PIPE SYSTEMS

*NEW* we now offer a 2 in one leadpipe system that gives the player great flexibility. An traditional resistance “insert-system” with traditional flextune tuning bits, and the new Fixtune butt system where the (often tapered) leadpipe meets the bore of the instrument. This new Fixtune system is great for the lower pitches, players that like a big airflow and “holeless” playing.

Historic Trumpet

This instrument has a base-key-length of your choice. There are no vent-holes present. The standard length is Eb440. This option makes it possible to play all the way from Eb440 to A415. This is done by adding length to the trumpet at the lead-pipe side only using bits and crooks. This is the historically “correct” way of altering the pitch/key of a natural trumpet.

Additional Information:
Historic trumpets have historic (conical) joints. These joints are different than the joints on the FlexTune© system. Historic joints are not meant to be disassembled. Sometimes they are even sealed with wax if desired. Therefore it is not possible to offer vent-hole yards and elbows on this model.
Silver-plated joints, ball, and garland are optional.

Three-to-four hole conversion corpus

TO
---->

A video with more photos and a sound clip is found here

This corpus turns your short, three-hole trumpet bell into a very nice long trumpet bell. This allows you to play two different trumpets with the same bell. The bell stays unchanged. This system works and sounds great. The corpus can be designed for any trumpet bell and designed for use with or without vent-holes.

Used with vent-holes it is possible to use all the Flextune© AND Fixtune© system parts just like it is a full MG Flextune© or Fixtune© trumpet.

If the corpus is made for use without vent-holes it can be made from hand-rolled tubes and made with historic (shrunk) joints to facilitate better F’s and A’s and a nice, even overall resistance. That is a good way to be able to do decent “no-hole” practice without having to buy a full, new trumpet. As you might know, the bell is the most labour intensive part of the trumpet making process.

Prices range from €650 (corpus only, for use with your own bell) to €2000 depending on the amount of pitches chosen. A corpus with crooks and yards in D-C 440 or 415 only is about €1350. All prices including vat.
The price for a full historic corpus for use without ventholes pitched in D and C (and tuned by adding tuning bits and crooks instead of flextune leadpipes) range from about €1200 (for drawn tubes) to €1800 (for handrolled tubes).

Classical Crook Kit for short trumpets.

This kit turns your three hole trumpet into a classical (430) trumpet without holes, and makes “hand-stopping” of those funky notes on the natural trumpet possible.

Picture: egger corpus (Haas bell) with MG leadpipe,
F440 elbow, and 430 crooks in D, C and B-flat

Nicolas Isabelle, a good friend and specialized trumpet player (baroque, classical), asked me to make crooks that go on the lead-pipe side of his short Egger trumpet. His idea was to fixate the trumpet in F440 using the “normal” egger crook system, so the instrument could be crooked down the “traditional way” to all the keys below that using the custom designed classical crooks .

Nicolas showed me some photos of an original classical trumpet by Raoux and he asked me to make similar crooks for his egger. I did what he asked me to do and it works extremely well. In the higher and lower pitches intonation is very good and the instrument is easy to play and feels secure. The fact that you can reach into the bell with your hand to adjust the pitch is a big bonus.

What you need to convert your short trumpet into a (more historically correct) classical instrument is a short MG classical leadpipe, a F440 elbow (egger or MG), and classical crooks.

Crooks are available for Egger trumpets only at this moment. Soon I will be offering a Martinus Geelen classical trumpet, which will be less of a compromise than the egger trumpet. This future trumpet will fit these exact same crooks.
